Sciatica
Sciatica is a
condition that causes pain in the lower region of the
back and the legs.It is often caused when part of the
sciatic nerve becomes pinched or
injured.
Often the damage to the
sciatic nerve is the result of a herniated
disc. When a disc in the back is not properly
aligned or becomes dislocated, it is referred to as a
herniated disc. Sciatica is
most common in middle aged adults but can also occur in
both older and younger patients. In most cases it is not
the result of an injury but instead caused by the stress
of daily activities on the back. Most patients who are
afflicted with sciatica will recover within a couple of
weeks to a few months time frame. Surgery is usually not
needed to relieve the symptoms of this
condition.The pain
caused by sciatica can range from severe to mild in
patients. Some are still able to perform their daily
activities with a little discomfort while others may be
temporarily incapacitated. Most often only one side of
the body is affected. The pain starts in the lower back
region and extends to the leg. In some cases it can even
affect the foot and toes.
The following
are some common symptoms associated with sciatica: pain
in the lower part of the back, a burning sensation in the
leg, difficulty or discomfort when sitting down, a sharp
pain that occurs when trying to stand up, and numbness or
weakness that occurs in the leg or foot when
active.If you or a
member of your family suffers from sciatica, there are a
number of treatments available. The type of treatment
chosen often depends on the pain and severity of the
illness. In some cases physical therapy and special
exercises designed to relieve pressure on the sciatic
nerve may provide relief. If your pain is more severe,
you may be prescribed an anti inflammatory drug or
steroid to help decrease inflammation around the nerve
area. If neither of these treatment options is effective,
surgery may be considered as a final resort for treating
the condition.
