Sciatica and TMD
Sciatica and TMD are often related problems that indicate
serious muscular, nervous and spinal
problems.
Sciatica is actually a term
that refers to range of symptoms caused by herniated disk or
even other medical disorders like infections. The sciatic
nerve extends down through the leg into a persons foot.
So any pressure applied against the root sciatic nerve can
actually lead to several problems. Most commonly the
symptoms are a radiating pain down through the back of the leg,
but can sometimes wrap around to the front and lower leg.It is
not uncommon for this pain to be felt in the calf area as well
hindering a person’s ability to walk without debilitating
pain. TMD (Temporomandibular Disc) has so many symptoms
that many patients are confused as to what affliction they may
actually be suffering. Symptoms always involve pain, but in
seeming random areas. Constant headaches that begin in
the upper part of the neck along with pain in the ear
specifically when chewing are a few of the
symptoms.
Some patients also
experience jaw pain and blurred visions. Like sciatica,
TMD can gradually manifest itself and is commonly diagnosed
after some sort of physical trauma. Usually traffic
accidents or repeated but subtle trauma to the neck and jaw can
lead to the onset of TMD.Another factor that sciatica and TMD
have in common is that stress can be an underlying issue.
Stress tends to tighten key muscle group in the lumbar region
of the spine and the also the neck and jaw. Due to this
constant tension, TMD can develop. Both sciatica and TMD
can be treated with heat and cold therapy applied several times
daily. Heat and cold therapy helps not only to relieve
pain, but can also help to loosen the muscle groups causing the
pressure. Message therapy is also advised as it can help
to strengthen muscles groups. Studies have shown that stronger
muscles can help to prevent Sciatica and TMD.
