Low Back Pain

Low back pain is a common condition that affects millions of people every year. Fortunately the majority of cases clear up within a few days to a few months time on their own.

Usually low back pain occurs when a part of the back such as the muscles, tendons, ligaments or discs become strained. This can be the result of improperly lifting an object, over exercising, or a sudden impact caused by an automobile accident or similar trauma. The pain may be unbearable for a day or two but after the initial incident most physicians recommend that you return to your daily activities as soon as possible. Prolonged bed rest can cause the back and muscles to stiffen and actually make the condition worse.

Since many times low back pain will heal on its own without treatment by a physician, there are many things you can do to ease the discomfort for the first couple of days. There are several over the counter medications available that contain Ibuprofen. Try taking one of these to help ease the pain. You should move around as much as physically possible without straining yourself. This will actually help your back to heal faster and prevent unwanted stiffness. Sitting for prolonged periods is also not recommended since this often causes pain in the back and buttocks area. You will probably notice that your low back pain is the worst when first waking up in the morning. This is because you have not been active for several hours and the muscles have started to stiffen up. Although it may be very painful at first, it is very important that you do not remain in bed. The pain will subside or lessen as you move about more.

People who are physically active on a regular basis generally have a lesser chance of experiencing low back pain. This is because their muscles are in better condition and less prone to injury. Good posture is also a plus when trying to avoid low back pain. Be aware of your posture especially when engaging in physical activities. How you carry or lift items is just as important as how much weight you are trying to lift. Even items of ten pounds can strain your back when not lifted properly.
