Herniated disk
A herniated disk is a common condition that
affects both the neck and lower region of the
back.
Often people will incorrectly refer to
a herniated disk as a ruptured or slipped disk.
When a disk becomes herniated the inner portion
or disk center has protruded through the outer layers. This can
cause excess pressure on the spinal nerves which in turn leads
to severe pain.
Patients suffering from a herniated disk may
experience pain in several areas throughout the body including
the neck, back, arms, and legs. Often there is also a feeling
of numbness or overall weakness in the legs. Sciatica is a
condition that frequently accompanies a herniated disk. It can
cause pain in the lower back region and extend all the way down
the leg, sometimes even affecting the foot and toes.
As a person grows older, the chances of having
a herniated disk increase. This is due to the fact that many
older adults are less active, the disks in the back have begun
to shrink with age, and the body becomes less flexible making
it more susceptible to injury.
Older adults
especially need to be careful not to strain or over exert their
back muscles. However, this does not mean they should avoid all
types of exercise. Older adults who remain physically fit will
have less chance of suffering a herniated disk as well as a
number of other health problems.
There are precautions that people of all ages
can take to lessen their chances of having a herniated disk.
One of the most important things to do is properly lift heavy
objects. Improper lifting causes the majority of back
injuries. Never attempt to lift an object that is too heavy for
you. When lifting objects bend your knees and let your legs
remain flexible. Your back should be as straight as possible
when lifting. Another factor that increases your risk of back
injury is excess pounds which cause added pressure on the body.
If you are overweight, you should make an attempt to shed
unwanted pounds. This will not only decrease your likelihood of
a back injury but it will also improve overall health. Lastly
you should avoid repetitive activities that are physically
strenuous. If you must perform a task that requires repetitive
motion, try to take breaks or complete the job within a few
days time. This will prevent unnecessary strain to the back and
decrease your chances of any back injury, including a herniated
disk.
