Fibromyalgia

If you commonly experience muscle aches and pains on a regular basis and frequently feel tired or fatigued, you may suffer from a chronic condition known as fibromyalgia.

Although doctors have not yet identified the cause of this condition, there are several factors commonly present in patients who suffer from fibromyalgia including a bacterial or viral infection, trouble sleeping soundly or inability to sleep for long periods without waking, hormonal changes in the body, injury or physical trauma to the body, decreased blood flow to the muscles, and chemical variations in the brain, especially a low level of serotonin. An abnormal amount of serotonin in the body can lead to several conditions including depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine headaches.

There are also several risk factors that may increase your chance of developing fibromyalgia. First of all the condition is much more common in women than men. Approximately eighty to ninety percent of the population who suffers from this condition is female. Secondly, if a close family member has fibromyalgia, it can increase your likelihood of developing the condition too. Difficulty in sleeping is one of the most common complaints of this condition. However, doctors have not yet been able to determine if a difficulty in sleeping somehow causes the condition or if it simply is a symptom of the disease itself. Patients, who suffer from arthritis or some other type of rheumatic disease, may be at an increased risk to develop fibromyalgia during their lifetime. Lastly, fibromyalgia most commonly occurs in mid to younger adults and sometimes even children. Therefore, you chance of developing the condition actually decreases with age.

There are several ways to go about combating this condition including seeking the advice of your physician, learning how to better cope with the disease through self-care, and a number of alternative treatment methods. It is important to note that there is not one preferred method of treatment for patients suffering from fibromyalgia. To best deal with the condition, you need to experiment in order to find out what methods work best for your individual treatment plan.
