One of the common myths associated with back pain is that patients need complete bed rest until the condition improves. While you may benefit from a day of two of rest after an injury due to a specific incident, lack of movement for a long period of time can even cause the condition to worsen. Too much rest can lead to increased stiffening in the back area and weakening of the muscles. A few days after your injury you should start with a simple exercise program to provide back pain relief and gradually increase the intensity as the condition improves. By exercising on a regular basis you can improve your overall strength and therefore decrease your risk of additional back injuries in the future.
